For a long time, Schlafly didn't attend GABF. It is great to see Schlafly winning medals.

Cheers!

Not to take anything away from Cinder Block, but I am surprised to see Northtown Native in the "Dortmunder or German-Style Oktoberfest" category, my understanding is that it's a California Common/Steam beer?

Regardless, congrats to all the winners!

I thought that was odd as well - they most certainly call it a Cal Common. Checking the GABF listings, Steam / California Common doesn't appear to be a category - unless I'm missing it.

Here is the category / sub category:

American-Style Amber Lager
- Subcategory: American-Style Amber Lager
- Subcategory: California Common Beer
- Subcategory: American-Style Maerzen/Oktoberfest

Though I don't see medals for "California Common Beer"

Medals aren't awarded to subcategories. They're all judged together.

Thanks Jeremy, makes sense - I assume the brewer states style with their submission? IE, Cinder Block submitted Native as "Dortmunder or German-Style Oktoberfest"?

Yes, when you enter the beers, you pick the subcategory. No, my guess would be that they entered it as a cali common, but the master style is what's shown during the awards ceremony.

For example, we entered Tank 7 Farmhouse Ale in Category 23 (American-Belgo-Style Ale) subcategory A. Pale American-Belgo-Style Ale. Had we won a medal, they simply would have said it was for American-Belgo-Style Ale. Check out the guidelines. It makes a little more sense that way:

I don't want to make too much out of this, but checking the style guidelines in the pdf, California Common is a subcategory of American-style Amber Lager. Shouldn't they have won the medal for that if that's how the beer was entered?

Dortmunder or German-style Oktoberfest has two different subcategories, Dortmunder/European-style Export and German-style Oktoberfest/Wiesn.

Again, it's no big deal, just curious. It's a tasty beer all the same, I get a sample every time I go there.
