Aged beers finally popped!

So I finally popped this 2014 Parabola. It's in fantastic shape. What are some beers you guys were either excited or disappointed in how they aged?

I spent over a decade aging various beers. It was a fun experiment and always a treat to open something I'd been holding onto for a long time. But in the end, most of the beers that were aged weren't better because of it. In fact, many I found not nearly as enjoyable as fresh. Usually, they were past their prime after 5 years. However, the notable exception is Sierra Nevada's Bigfoot. That's one that really holds up well over time and is delicious at any age (up to 10 years in my experience). So, I always buy a six-pack of it each year to keep a running vertical going.

Others I've enjoyed: Sierra Nevada Narwhal, Great Divide Hibernation Ale and Old Ruffian (out of production now), North Coast Old Stock Ale, and Goose Island BCBS.

Because Randyl and I had a major beer collecting "problem" a while back, we attempted to whittle our stash down. Each week, we'd pick out several large bottles and put them in the fridge, dedicating ourselves to opening a couple each night. While we might not kill each beer, we at least enjoyed some of it while it was in its prime as opposed to opening a bottle and going, "Damn. This is dead."

I would agree, also to note that 5 years is a very long time to age a beer. The vast bulk of the time, especially these days, I try not to hold onto anything for more than 3 years tops. Otherwise, 1-2 will do just fine if I don't feel like drinking it right away for some reason.

One exception to mention, the Stone Bigger Longer and Uncut that I picked up back in 2016 (100% Islay Scotch-barrel aged Double Bastard that clocks in at 13% abv). It was nearly undrinkable fresh, but I cracked one recently and it had greatly improved! Much better integration, way less hot, the peat was minimized a bit, overall it really needed the time in the cellar. Again though, that is for sure an exception.

I would also add Bells Expedition to the list, it tends to benefit quite a bit from some extended aging (3-5 years is perfect, in my experience).
