Red Crow Brewing Company began shipping its first kegs for distribution to area bars last week. The brewery is shipping kegs of its Isabelle Belgian Blonde, Louise IPA, and limited quantities of Margaret Old Ale, a winter seasonal, to select bars in Kansas. The beers should be on tap in coming weeks at Jerry’s Bait Shop (Lenexa), Grinders Stonewall (Lenexa), Burg & Barrel (Overland Park), Brickyard (Olathe), Old Shawnee Pizza (Lenexa), Tanners (87th Street), Barley’s (119th Street), and other spots.
Oyster Stout and Cherry Cider

Cinder Block Brewery teamed up with Jax Fish House & Oyster Bar for the second consecutive year to create and release the Emersum Oyster Stout in time for Mardi Gras celebrations. The stout is brewed with six dozen of Jax’s proprietary and wholly sustainable Emersum Oysters, which add a natural minerality and create a rich texture to the beer.

Brewery owner Bryce Schaffter shared notes on changes to the oyster stout brew from last year.

“We updated the base malt to a Scottish Malt from Simpsons Malting called Golden Promise,” said Schaffter. “This year’s [version] has a full-bodied stout flavor leading into some mineral and salty tones with really a nice dark malt taste.”

Cinder Block is also releasing a new year-round Cherry Cider.

“The Cherry Cider is produced from a base of Louisburg Cider that we get fresh, then we ferment and condition the cider,” said Schaffter. “After that it is blended with tart cherries to give it the cherry kick. The Cherry Cider has an effervescent tart apple and cherry flavor that comes across as balanced between the two fruits, enabling them to both showcase their natural flavors.”
Breakfast By The Glass

Maple syrup, rye, bourbon, and oak barrels all played a delicious role in the making of Boulevard Brewing Company’s Requiem for a Pancake. Packaged in 12-ounce bottles, this Imperial Brown Ale will be available to the public at Boulevard Brewing’s Tours & Recreation Center beginning at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 1, ($12 each, limit four per person).

Last year, Boulevard’s brewers and barrel-wranglers obtained a collection of eight-gallon oak barrels used to age Woodinville Whiskey Co.’s rye and bourbon before taking a turn aging rich, complex maple syrup. Boulevard brewed its boozy Imperial Brown Ale and let it take a nap in these twice-used micro-barrels before this limited-release. For every bottle sold, Boulevard will donate $1 to Guadalupe Centers, Inc.
Ticket Mastery

Don’t delay on buying tickets for upcoming late winter and spring beer events.

The Big Rip Brewing Company hosts its annual Snake Saturday Parade celebration on March 11, beginning at 8 a.m. with Kegs and Pancakes before the parade. Breakfast is $5 and includes pancakes and sausage links. RSVP requested. After the parade, Hawg Jaw BBQ — a new barbecue spot next door to Big Rip at 900 Swift Avenue — will serve barbecue in the event room. Big Rip will have Irish Red Ale and The Priest Mint Chocolate Milk Stout on tap.

The 14th Annual Parkville Microbrew Festival takes place from 1 to 5 p.m., April 29, at English Landing Park. Admission starts 11 a.m. Gates open at 1 p.m. Guests receive a commemorative logo tasting glass, a custom tasting note sheet, and live music. Tickets are $35 in advance, $45 at the gate.

Tickets for Boulevardia, the urban beer, food, and music street festival hosted by the Boulevard Brewing Company, on June 16 and 17, are on sale now.

The 8th Annual Kansas City Nanobrew Festival will be held 2 to 6 p.m., June 24, in Berkley Riverfront Park. Admission includes unlimited tastings from more than 200 unique homebrewed beers, a full-size souvenir glass, food, and entertainment. Tickets are $30.

Celebrate Mardi Gras at Jax Fish House (4814 Roanoke Parkway), where chef de cuisine Theresia Ota will offer three special dish and drink pairings. Nibble on beignets paired with Cinder Block Brewery’s new Cherry Cider, a crawfish boil paired with Cinder Block’s Emersum Oyster Stout, made with the restaurant’s proprietary oysters, and lox bagel paired with Restless Spirits’ Lemon-Lavender Gin Cocktail.

Fat Tuesday fun continues at Bier Station (120 E. Gregory Boulevard) with French Quarter-inspired food and beer specials. Grab a plate of gumbo, a breaded shrimp po’ boy, or muffaletta, wash the goodness down with Bier Station’s Hurricane beer cocktail or an Abita Mardi Gras Bock, and let the good times roll.

Barley’s Kitchen + Tap (16649 Midland Drive, Shawnee) taps a dozen of Firestone Walker’s beers for a tap takeover from 5 to 8 p.m. Highlights include Nitro Merlin Milk Stout, Agrestic, Bretta Weisse, Krieky Bones, Feral One, Vintage Series Bravo Imperial Brown Ale, Helldorado, Twenty Anniversary Blend, and the Kansas draft launch of Luponic Distortion: Rev. No. 005.

Wednesday, March 1

The first rule about Beer Club at Hy-Vee Lee’s Summit (301 NE Rice Road) is…RSVP in store to guarantee a spot for gatherings, such as this visit from Oklahoma City’s Coop Ale Works. From 7 to 8 p.m., brewery representative Laura Heiman will share a history of the brewery, discuss some of the brewery’s offerings, and answer questions.

Thursday, March 2

Support Camp Wildwood’s outdoor education for low-income children through a fundraiser at Bier Station, featuring Martin City Brewing Company’s Belgian Blond, Hard Way IPA, Highwayman, and Abbey Ale on tap. All proceeds from sales of Belgian Blond and Hard Way IPA, plus a percentage of all draft sales that day go to Camp Wildwood.

KC Girl’s Pint Out and ZZ Hops host a 4th Annual Girl Scout Cookie Pairing (127 W 10th Street). Craft beer from ZZ Hops homebrewers will be paired with irresistible cookies. Participants will sample up to three brews per cookie with eight cookie flavors in all. The $25 ticket includes a taster glass, 16 cookies (two each of eight flavors), up to 22 samples of ZZ Hops’ best beers, a raffle ticket, and light snacks.

Leavenworth Downtown businesses host the March Alive After 5 Beer Festival (416 Cherokee Street, Leavenworth) from 5 to 8 p.m. $20 tickets for first-time participants; $15 for returning participants. Tickets available at 416 Cherokee or online.

The Burger Stand (803 Massachusetts Street, Lawrence, Kansas) hosts a Draws For Paws Craft Beer Mixer from 5 to 11 p.m. in the Burger Stand Beer Hall. Martin City Brewing Company brand ambassador Robb Richmiller will offer swag and special beers on tap. A percentage of proceeds from sales of MCBC’s Big Boy Bourbon Barrel-Aged Stout will be donated to the Lawrence Humane Society.

Saturday, March 4

Fringe Beerworks (224 SE Douglas Street, Lee’s Summit) will demonstrate its brewing process from noon to 4 p.m. as part of Downtown Lee’s Summit Spring Open House Series.

Velo Garage and Tap House (1403 Swift Avenue, North Kansas City) officially opens. First launched as VeloWagon, the mobile bike repair and taproom gets a permanent home in Northtown. Visit the repair shop, try one of ten beers on tap or choose from the bottle and can selection, meet the owners, try Dez Nuts, play shuffleboard, and score swag from Velo Garage and Swift Optics.

The Fourth Annual Kansas Craft Brewers Exposition at Abe & Jake’s Landing (8 E 6th Street, Lawrence) is split into two sessions from noon to 3 p.m. and 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Guests (age 21+) may sample scores of regional beers and meet area brewers. Food, music, T-shirts, glassware, and informational and educational displays available.

Monday, March 6

Martin City Brewing Company (500 E 135th Street) releases Banging The Enemy Red IPA. Available in six-packs in liquor stores and on draft around town starting March 6, Banging the Enemy is a robust IPA suitable for March Madness and spring sipping.

Get ready to swing into spring at the Spring Fling Homebrew Festival.

Rodney Beagle, brewer at the forthcoming brewery Colony Handcrafted Ales, founded the first annual Spring Fling festival in partnership with Colony and the NKC Rotary Club. The Spring Fling features 30 homebrewers and 70 homebrews. It takes place from 5 to 8 p.m. on April 8 at iWerx (1520 Clay, North Kansas City, Missouri). All funds raised will be donated to scholarship funds for North Kansas City high school students.

Beagle has seen a big uptick in area homebrewing clubs and thought this was the perfect way to help new brewers showcase their beer.

“[This will] show the city that our homemade beer ranks right up there with the city’s most prominent breweries,” said Beagle.

Several homebrewers discussed what they will serve at the festival. David Schumacher, a homebrewer for six years, dubs his beer “SchuBrew.” Schumacher took home five medals at the 34th Annual Kansas City Bier Meisters competition. At Spring Fling, SchuBrew will have Keep on Trolling IPA, a hazy New England-style IPA.

“I’ve kind of had a love/hate relationship with the ‘style’ and mainly the hype around them in the local community. I decided to join the hype train and give one a go,” said Schumacher. “I used over a pound of hops including El Dorado, Denali, and Azzaca. It should have a lot of tropical notes and be juicy and hazy, but more importantly, easy drinking.”

Schubrew Cider, a classic semi-sweet cider, and Drunk American at St Patty’s Day, a Hoppy Red Ale, are two other Schubrew offerings.

Jerimy Warford has been homebrewing for four years as Level Two Brewing. He won three medals last year at the Missouri Mashers Hot Summer Brew Off. At Spring Fling, Warford will serve Frickin Laser Beams, a French-style saison brewed with hibiscus flower that is floral and refreshing with a bit of spice from the yeast. Another entry, a hazy beer, represents a trendy characteristic in the appearance of East Coast-style IPAs.

“Persistent Princess is my take on a popular northeast brewing style that makes the beer’s appearance more hazy,” said Warford. “It’s a fruity, citrus pale ale brewed with oats and late hop additions. Both of my beers for this event focus on bright, refreshing styles that reflect the season.”

The haze can come from different sources during the brew process. “Mine comes from having a large amount of oats in the grain bill. The oats give it both a hazy appearance and a silky mouthfeel,” said Warford.

Alex Workman, a homebrewer for 7 years, won gold in the Topeka Hall of Foamer’s competition for his Imperial Stout Ale X. Listed as Scouting the Taps at Spring Fling, Workman will serve Saison De Laubss and Phoenix IPA. The saison was designed and brewed with Thin Mint Girl Scout cookies in mind for a pairing.

“I worked with Mike Strohm from The W in Lee’s Summit to pair the chocolate and mint flavors with the palate cleansing dryness of the saison, sweet pear flavor, and spiciness from ginger,” said Workman.

“It was designed with Boulevard’s The Calling and Deschutes Fresh Squeezed in mind. Fresh citrus flavors and aroma but still has a malt presence,” said Workman.
Boulevard Brewing Company's Changeling

Boulevard Brewing Company’s Changeling is out next week. Changeling, a limited-release from Boulevard Brewing Company’s Smokestack series, is a barrel-aged sour ale (7.1 percent ABV, 25 IBU) that will be available in 750-ml. bottles on April 4. This blend of dark sour ales was aged in whiskey and wine barrels that were inoculated with Brettanomyces and lactobacillus. Deep ruby color in color, the beer’s aroma leads with plum and caramel, shifts to lemon and tart cherry, and exudes notes of oak, vanilla, and char. [Note: Boulevard gave Flatland a pre-market bottle to preview.]

Brewery Emperial (1829 Oak) has on tap Kristall Weizen (4 percent ABV, 16 IBU), a filtered German wheat beer without yeast, that presents banana and clove flavor and aroma. Head brewer and co-owner Keith Thompson will soon release a Whisky Ale (7.3 percent ABV, 12 IBU). “It’s our interpretation of a classic Scotch Ale with translucent amber, subtle smoke, roasted and peat malt, and smoked brown sugar,” said Thompson.

Elizabeth, a fruity and spicy saison, is now available at the Red Crow Brewing Company (20561 S Lone Elm Road, Spring Hill, Kansas) taproom.

Crane Brewing Company (6515 Railroad Street, Raytown, Missouri) recently packaged more than 2,000 bottles of its Orange Gose. Look for this crowd favorite on draught and in 750-ml. bottles in April.

This week, Martin City Brewing Company (500 E 135th Street) offers a taproom-only release of Raspberry Jive, a barrel-aged sour ale with raspberry. Bottles will be available for sale at the taproom.

A flight of beers at Smoke Brewing includes a milk stout, American pale ale, and Irish red ale.

Tuesday, March 28

For Hopcat (401 Westport Road), Bell’s Oberon Day symbolizes the start of spring and baseball season. The taproom taps Oberon, an American Pale Wheat Ale fermented with Bell’s signature house ale yeast. Spicy hop character meets mildly fruity aromas with the addition of wheat malt for a smooth mouthfeel.

Thursday, March 30

Smoke Brewing Company (209 SE Main Street, Lee’s Summit) officially opens. The gastropub and brewery welcomes guests with menu items such as spiced pork rinds and street tacos. Beers brewed by Bert Lightle include Black Udder Milk Stout, Keltic Kross Irish Red Ale, Irish Water Export Stout, and Juice American IPA.

Boulevard Brewing Company’s Tours & Rec Center (2534 Madison Avenue) hosts Hop Quiz No. 2, a trivia game focused on general topics, pop culture, and beer knowledge. Sign up in advance for $10 and receive two draft beers of your choice. This event is 21 and over, and you can have up to six players max per team.

Friday, March 31

Dine on authentic Spanish food from El Tenedor food truck, 5 to 8 p.m., at Red Crow Brewing Company (20561 S Lone Elm Road, Spring Hill, Kansas) taproom. The paella is a treat.

Saturday, April 1

Crane Brewing beer tasting is at Mike’s Wine and Spirits (8447 Wornall Road) in Waldo.

Cellar Man’s Kitchen food truck will be serving BLT waffle fries, smoked wings, and more at Cinder Block Brewery (110 E 18th Avenue, North Kansas City, Missouri).

The taproom at Crane Brewing (6515 Railroad Street, Raytown, Missouri) taps its 2017 Small Ball Saison before April 3rd — the opening day of Major League Baseball’s 2017 season. Small Ball Saison (5.2 percent ABV) is dry-hopped and then bottle-conditioned with Brettanomyces. Initially, the profile sings of fresh hops. Over time, the yeast continues to ferment, adding complexity to the beer.

Sunday, April 2

KC Pet Project will be in Boulevard Brewing’s Beer Hall (2534 Madison Avenue) to discuss the upcoming animal shelter initiative before the April 4th local election. Proceeds from Beer Hall Bully! Porter sales will benefit KC Pet Project. Dine on the popular Bully! Porter Banger special: an Irish-inspired pretzel dog, chips and 12oz. Bully! Porter for $9. Three dollars of each lunch special sold will benefit KCPP.

Monday, April 3

Barley’s Kitchen + Tap (11924 W 119th Street, Overland Park, Kansas) hosts Boulevard Brewing for a Tap Takeover from 3 to 6 p.m. in honor of the KC Royals’ 2017 season opener. Beers on tap will include Show Me Sour, Scotch on Scotch, Noble Prize Imperial Pilsner, and Rye on Rye on Rye. They’re holding raffles for Royals tickets and a Boulevard Brewery Tour, plus glass giveaways.

Magic is ready to take center stage again. Torn Label Brewing Company (1708 Campbell Street) will release one of its most popular beers, Magic Magic, an East Coast-style IPA brewed with raspberry and lemon peel, at a release party and art show at 5 p.m. on Friday, April 7.

Magic Magic is part of Torn Label’s Artists Series of limited-release beers, crafted in collaboration with a local artist. The beer was inspired by the artwork of Torn Label sales rep/taproom manager Thomas Woodward.

Woodward said that Magic Magic “alludes to a moment in a painting where I am talking about the act of painting itself. Creation is magic and to create from an internal place something that had previously not existed is doubly so – hence, Magic Magic.”

Brewmaster Travis Moore worked with Woodward to create a beer with that artistic perspective. The beer will be available on draft at the taproom, as well as in cans to-go. Woodward will also have a collection of new works on display and for sale in the brewery. Fifty percent of the proceeds of all art sales will be donated by Woodward and Torn Label to the Mattie Rhodes Center, a nonprofit community development organization dedicated to well-being through social services, behavioral health counseling and the arts.

Magic Magic is the first Torn Label seasonal or limited release beer to be canned. The beer will also see limited distribution in Kansas City, Missouri, and Kansas the following week.
Dogfish Head Begins Missouri Distribution

Craft beer fans of Dogfish Head Craft Brewery had reason to rejoice last week. The brewery announced that their full collection of brews will be distributed in Missouri beginning April 3.

Based in Delaware, Dogfish has inked a distribution deal with Kansas City-based Central States Beverage and four other distributors across the Show-Me State. Dogfish fans will be able to enjoy a full lineup that includes 90 Minute IPA, Namaste White, Indian Brown, 60 Minute IPA, SeaQuench Ale, Flesh & Blood IPA, Palo Santo Marron, Burton Baton, Midas Touch, and seasonal releases. Limited quantities of specialty beers and occasional rarities, like 120 Minute IPA, will also be available throughout the year.
Dogfish Head

BKS Artisan Ales Update

Mary and Brian Rooney of BKS Artisan Ales (633 E 63rd Street) shared an update on the buildout of their Brookside brewery (read our story on the city’s first nanobrewery here). The brewery is awaiting final inspection and approvals from the city on its space. Once approved, BKS Artisan Ales can begin brewing. Future plans for the soft opening of the tasting room include ticketed events for customers on Saturdays with beer available on tap, and can and bottle releases (no draft pours) on Sundays.

Boulevard Brewing News

Boulevard Brewing Company announced that Collaboration No. 7 Oak Aged Lager will be brewed with Arizona Wilderness Brewing Company from Gilbert, Arizona, and Creature Comforts Brewing Company in Athens, Georgia. Collaboration No. 7 – Oak-Aged Lager is currently scheduled for an August release.

Tap Notes

Calibration Brewery (119 Armour Road, North Kansas City, Missouri) now offers the following specials. Monday: $3 ciders, IPA, brown ale and golden ale. Tuesday: $4 beers and half-price appetizers for service industry staff all night. Thursday: $10 growler refills all night.

Cinder Block Brewery (110 E 18th Avenue, North Kansas City, Missouri) released another addition to its Hop Maven series: Hop Maven 007 has juicy fruit flavors of melon and citrus. This hazy Northeastern-style IPA is a hop bonanza with Mosaic, Cashmere, Citra, and Magnum hops. It was also dry-hopped with 75 pounds of hops.

Brewery Emperial (1829 Oak) has Malt Whisky Ale, an American version of Scotch ale at the lower end of wee heavy strength, on tap.

“We cold smoked about 50 pounds of brown sugar and inverted it in the kettle,” said brewer Keith Thompson. “Total boil time was two-and-a-half hours, [resulting in] some caramel and toffee character coming from the wort.”

The Porter also makes a return this week. Upcoming beers in the works include Old School Cream Ale, Maibock, Berliner Weisse, Saison, and a Marris Otter-forward Strong Pale.

Fringe Beerworks (224 SE Douglas Street, Lee’s Summit, Missouri) releases its 4/4 Madam X (Coffee), a milk stout made with Roasterie coffee poured on nitro.

Rock and Run Brewery and Pub (114 E Kansas Street, Liberty, Missouri) releases Funky Funky Farmhouse, a bottle-only sour beer with notes of iced tea and lemon. This beer is available to Brew Club members only on April 4th. Available to the general public on Wednesday, April 5th. No limits, while supplies last.

Rock and Run also kicks off the Dogfish Head release week in KC. Starting at 6 p.m., the taproom will have Dogfish Head beers on tap, including 60 Minute IPA, SeaQuench Ale, Saison du BUFF, Palo Santo Marron, and Beer for Breakfast (a stout with Guatemalan Antigua cold press coffee and maple syrup harvested from western Massachusetts), and Delaware Rapa Scrapple.

Pig & Finch (11570 Ash Street, Leawood, Kansas) hosts a Firestone Walker Beer Dinner, 6:30 p.m.

Kansas City Bier Company (310 W 79th Street) welcomes the Stammtisch German Group as they meet from 6 to 8 p.m. On the first Tuesday of every month, German-speaking patrons meet in the tasting room to enjoy bier, food and German conversation. All are welcome.

Wednesday, April 5

Kansas City Bier Company taps Wunder Pils bier (8.5 percent ABV, 42 IBU) made with 100 percent pils malt and Mittelfruh hops to produce a full, round malt backbone. A higher IBU and some late hopping give the beer a perceptible bitterness and hop flavor.

Grains & Taps (10 SW 3rd Street, Lee’s Summit, Missouri) hosts a Dogfish Head Tap Takeover beginning at 6 p.m. The shop will tap 8 to 10 kegs of Dogfish Head beer for the event.

Martin City Brewing Company will be featured in Beer School at Hy-Vee (301 NE Rice Road, Lee’s Summit, Missouri) from 7 to 9 p.m.

Thursday, April 6

Fringe Beerworks (224 SE Douglas St., Lee’s Summit, Missouri) has a tap takeover from 6 to 8 p.m., featuring Founders’ KBS, Frootwood, Red Rye, PC Pils, and Old Curmudgeon.

Bier Station (120 E Gregory) hosts a Dogfish Head launch party at 4 p.m.

Calibration Brewery (119 Armour Road, North Kansas City, Missouri) offers a tour and tasting hosted by Kansas City Girls Pint Out. A ticket ($5) includes a Girls Pint Out swag item, plus $2 off first pint or flight. Tour will start about 6:45 p.m.

Junipucker Release Party from 4 to 9 p.m. at The Taproom at Crane Brewing (6515 Railroad Street, Raytown, Missouri) features a homebrew recipe scaled up to a larger batch using Crane’s brew system. Junipucker is a slightly tart saison featuring fresh juniper berries. It has herbal notes and delicate acidity.

Saturday, April 8

Kegs ‘n’ Eggs Kansas City returns at The Kansas City Renaissance Festival (628 N 126th Street, Bonner Springs, Kansas). The combined adult Easter egg hunt and craft beer festival includes thousands of hidden Easter eggs filled with prizes, more than 50 craft breweries, 10 food trucks, a live band, and more than 10 craft vendors.

The first annual Spring Fling Beer Fest takes place at iWerx (1520 Clay Street, North Kansas City). Presented by the North Kansas City Rotary Club in association with Colony Hand Crafted Ales, the fest is meant to increase awareness of community involvement opportunities through Rotary International within a large and diverse demographic and to raise money for college scholarships to local students and other local community projects.

Lei on the Leinie’s celebrates the first anniversary of the Leinenkugel KC (1323 Walnut Street) taproom. From 7 p.m. to midnight at the luau, the taproom will give away a trip for two to the 150th anniversary of Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Co. and other prizes.

Sunday, April 9

BBQ and Beer on the Boulevard, a benefit for Harmony Project KC, takes place at Boulevard Brewing Company (2501 Southwest Boulevard) from 5 to 7 p.m. The event features unlimited BBQ and Boulevard beer. Enjoy a raffle and auction featuring AMC movie passes for a year, catered dinner party from Jack Stack, Sporting KC suite tickets.

Monday, April 10

Hy-Vee Market Grill (14955 W 151st Street, Olathe, Kansas) hosts a tap takeover with Red Crow Brewing with Margaret Old Ale, Isabelle Belgian Blonde, and Louise IPA available all day. Meet the brewer and owners Chris and Mistie Roberts around 5 p.m.

Martin City Brewing’s (500 E 135th Street) Radical Candor Double IPA (8.9 percent ABV, 79 IBU), a limited release, is on draft at its taproom. The beer will be available in six-packs at liquor stores and on draft in bars beginning April 11. The brewery describes Radical Candor’s color as a hazy glowing orange with fresh citrus aroma. Pronounced orange and grapefruit flavors and smooth maltiness balance out the hop bitterness. Look for a new Imperial Brown at the taproom next week as well.

Tap List | Remembering John Bryan & Draftcade Opens

John Bryan was a longtime fixture at the Boulevard Brewing Company and in the Kansas City craft beer community.

Kansas City’s craft beer community lost one of its most familiar faces last week. John Bryan died on Wednesday, April 12, at St. Luke’s Hospice House in Kansas City following a massive stroke. JB, as he was known to many, was 52 years old.

A mainstay at beer festivals and one of the architect’s of Kansas City’s beer landscape, Bryan worked for Boulevard Brewing Company for 17 years. His career with Boulevard began as a truck driver and part-time salesman and ended with him as the director of the brewery’s Artisanal Division, where he helped launch the Smokestack Series. He recently became the Central Territory Sales Director for the Firestone Walker Brewing Company, Boulevard’s sister brewery, and, in that new position, was a fixture at beer events around the country.

Anyone who met Bryan and spent time with him likely parted with a story, as such JB was a beloved and respected figure in the world of craft beer. Numerous tributes and photos shared via social media attest to his generosity, wit, knowledge of beer, innate coolness and zest for life. Draftcade ( 7250 NW 87th Street), an arcade bar concept, has opened in Zona Rosa with 60 craft beer taps and more than 75 arcade games, pinball games, and skee ball. Rotating beers on tap include Ommegang 3 Philosophers, Torn Label Brewing Alpha Pale Ale, Firestone Walker Pivo Pils, Crane Brewing Trailsmith, Lagunitas Aunt Sally Wild Ale, and plenty of other selections. The beer-friendly menu ranges from BLT tots to a smoked porter chicken sandwich to a maple glazed pork donut.

KC Bier Company (310 W 79th Street) conducts a one-hour brewery tour every Saturday at 1 p.m. The tour ($10) includes three samples and a 16-ounce souvenir glass.

Wednesday, April 19

Martin City Brewing Company launches Sideway Everyday American Ale at Grinders Stonewall (10240 Pflumm Road, Lenexa, Kansas) at 5 p.m. with cans of Sideway and Radical Candor. The brewery also brings Sideway to Westport Ale House (4128 Broadway) at 6 p.m.

Class is in session at Grain to Glass (1611 Swift Avenue, North Kansas City). The “Beer Flavor ID” session ($40) presents ten flavor spikes with an explanation of possible causes and preventions. The class is two hours in length. Registration is required.

Join Beer Paws for a pop-up shop at Gordon Biersch‘s Maibock Tapping Party (100 E 14th Street) from 5 to 9 p.m. The event is also a benefit for the Humane Society of Greater Kansas City.

Thursday, April 20

Head to The Other Place (16590 W 135th Street, Olathe, Kansas) at 4 p.m. for yard games and Martin City Brewing Company’s Sideway Everyday American Ale, Radical Candor, and Alchemy Coffee Stout. You can also find Sideway at Grinders Crossroads (417 E. 18th Street), 6 p.m.

Saturday, April 22

Lone Elm Tap Room (Whole Foods, 14615 W 119th Street, Olathe, Kansas) hosts a tap takeover with KC Bier Company from 2 to 5 p.m. On tap: Dunkel, Helles, Hefeweizen, Winterbock, Maibock (2016 and 2017), and Weizenbock (2016 and 2017).

As the winner of this year’s Bier Meisters Home Brew Scale Up Competition, guest brewer Joshua Boldt earned a brew day with KC Bier Company’s (310 W. 79th Street) head brewer Karlton Graham. Boldt’s prize-winning Dark Weizenbock, made with six malts including Wheat, Pilsner, and Munich, will be available at 2 p.m. at the brewer’s Bavarian Oak Barrel Tapping Party.

Celebrate Earth Day and National Park Week with Boulevard Brewing Company at its Beer Hall (2534 Madison Avenue). The brewery will conduct special sustainability-focused public tours, and Ripple Glass will be in the Tours & Rec Center spreading the word about glass recycling and handing out swag. Additionally, $1 from every can of beer sold in the Beer Hall will be donated to the National Park Foundation.

Science matters at Bier Station (120 E Gregory Boulevard), when they host the KC March For Science After Party/Earth Day Fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the parking lot. Cinder Block Brewery, Torn Label Brewing Company, Uinta Brewing, and New Belgium Brewing will have featured beers on the Station’s tap wall. Each brewery donates a large keg to a different “green” cause. Bier Station will buy an additional, large keg from each brewery to help raise funds for Bridging the Gap, KC STEM Alliance, The Nature Conservancy, and the National Park Service. The event is free.

Sunday, April 23

Head to KC Bier Company (310 W 79th Street) from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. for beer and trivia. This fundraiser benefits The People’s Climate Movement and Kansas Sierra Club.
