Remember when Black IPAs were a thing

That style really did turn out to be a fad after all, just like some of the more pre-eminent folks in the craft beer community said it would. Now there are practically none to be found anywhere. IPAs are still heading full-force towards Haze/Milkshake, fruity/tropical types, Session IPAs and of course nowadays Brut. I kind of miss them once in a while.

I had a good one last week, and was thinking the exact same thoughts.

I remember back when we released Grainstorm Black Rye IPA for the first time. When we announced we were brewing a black IPA, folks said, "Oh, don't you mean a hoppy porter?" We explained that we felt black IPAs were black in color from the use of midnight wheat or another dark malt, but did not feature roasted/chocolate notes from malts like porters/stouts do. Fast forward to the first time we released Flora Obscura, a dry-hopped porter, and the same folks said, "Oh, don't you mean a black IPA?" :D

I typically enjoyed the style but never quite understood its purpose. It just seemed like a gimmick to make any IPA black and that was the only difference.

Jeremy, please run it up to the top brass that fans are clamoring for a rerelease of Flora Obscura! Loved that stuff! Surely I'm not alone and can claim it had its fan. :D

I agree. Really liked Flora. Would love to see it return next fall/winter.

IMO there were a few really good black IPAs, but those were the exception. Wookey Jack and Hop in the Dark come to mind. Really liked Grainstorm too.

Middle of the road black IPAs we're better than the best brute I've had. ;-)

Hop In The Dark was great and if I remember right is what popularized the style. I liked the candied orange flavor in the middle that binded the chaos together.

Currently the Beer Hall has both Grainstorm and Flora Obscura on tap so we can go and taste the difference between a hoppy porter and a black IPA :D
