Thanks for mentioning the BTKC repost Jason.

Some interesting conversation over there. It seems many of the industry folks don't like Untappd due to inconsistent user behavior and knowledge. Unappd could adjust their ratings system to compensate for that, though.
I find this particularly interesting and it begs the question, who is the data on Untappd for? If it's to serve as a platform to guide consumers based on ratings, why should anyone care what the brewers think about it? At the same time, I think there's valuable info to be found on Untappd as a brewer if you know what you're looking for and are able to sort/sift through information to find reviews/thoughts that you feel are relevant to your business.

The thing about the inconsistent user behavior and knowledge is that it impacts all breweries (maybe not all equally, though) so, in theory, it's a level playing field.

Good points Jeremy.

Doesn't Untappd market their analytics capabilities to breweries and charge for the subscription?

Bases on what I've seen, the ratings system is more likely to artificially increase the aggregate rating of a brewery than it is to artificially decrease it. Hype is immensely powerful. I don't want to name names, because I don't want to call anyone out publicly, but this is happening with a handful of the breweries at the top of the list.

You can claim your brewery for free and then there are premium subscription services you can buy that come with some analytics, but if you're a brewery, I wouldn't say it's as valuable as if you're a beer bar. You can see which styles are trending in the area and which beers are getting high ratings, but it's not like a brewery can decide to throw a new beer on later in the week based on what they see from the previous weekend's numbers in the area in the same way that a bar can adjust their draft list to attract folks in.

When I managed BLVD's Untappd profile, I'd always keep a close eye on test beers and new beers and relay feedback to the brewing team and brewery leadership. Sometimes I'd find valuable stuff, other times not so much.
